چکیده

The UVic Earth System Climate Model (version 2.8 with parameters as described in detail in (28)) includes a three-dimensional ocean general circulation model, a dynamicthermodynamic sea ice model, a simple one-layer energy-moisture balance model of the atmosphere as well as land-surface and dynamic terrestrial vegetation components at a resolution of 1.8°×3.6° with 19 vertical levels in the ocean. Since vegetation is allowed to respond dynamically to changes in climate and CO2 concentrations, it is treated as an internal interactive feedback, rather than as part of the prescribed forcing as in previous studies without interactive vegetation.

Comment on "Climate sensitivity estimated from temperature reconstructions of the Last Glacial Maximum".

Schmittner et al. (Reports, 9 December 2011, p. 1385) report a new, low estimate of equilibrium climate sensitivity based on a comparison of Last Glacial Maximum climate model simulations and paleoproxy data. Here, we show that exclusion of questionable comparison points and constructive changes to model design are both likely capable of altering the most probable value of equilibrium climate s...

Climate sensitivity estimated from temperature reconstructions of the Last Glacial Maximum.

Assessing the impact of future anthropogenic carbon emissions is currently impeded by uncertainties in our knowledge of equilibrium climate sensitivity to atmospheric carbon dioxide doubling. Previous studies suggest 3 kelvin (K) as the best estimate, 2 to 4.5 K as the 66% probability range, and nonzero probabilities for much higher values, the latter implying a small chance of high-impact clim...

Quantitative reconstruction of past climates using extension of modern climate-pollen relations based on the MAT method

Introduction Instrumental records span only a tiny fraction (<107) of the Earth’s climatic history. Therefore, indirect source of climate data must be used. Subfossil pollen and plant macrofossil data derived from sediment profiles can provide quantitative information on past climate. Recognizing the relationship between pollen assemblages and climatic variables and then interpreting foss...

Modeling the seasonal distribution of planktonic foraminifera during the Last Glacial Maximum

[1] We studied the seasonality of planktonic foraminifera during the Last Glacial Maximum using a foraminifera model coupled to an ecosystem model. The model suggests that the timing of the maximum seasonal production of planktonic foraminifera during the Last Glacial Maximum occurred at a different time of the year from present day. The assumption of ‘‘stable’’ seasonality through time, one of...

The influence of continental ice, atmospheric COz, ~md land albedo on the climate of the last glacial maximum

The contributions of expanded continental ice, reduced atm9spheric CO2, and changes in land albedo to the maintenance of the climate of the last glacial maximum (LGM) are examined. A series of experiments is performed using an atmosphere-mixed layer ocean model in which these changes in boundary conditions are incorporated either singly or in combination. The model used has been shown to produc...
